Rosatom to partake in auction for nuclear plant in Saudi Arabia

GLASGOW, Nov 12 (PRIME) -- Russian state nuclear power corporation Rosatom plans to participate in an auction for construction of a nuclear power plant in Saudi Arabia, CEO Alexei Likhachyov told reporters late on Thursday.

“We have submitted all our documents again. … It is an important partner for us, and we will participate in the auction,” he said.

The company would also like to partake in construction of nuclear power plants in Turkey. It depends on conditions of the projects, but Rosatom’s participation will be only logical, he said.

He also said that the combined reserves of uranium in the world would be enough for the current generation of nuclear power plants to operate for the next 60 years.

“The humankind is concerned about its reserves of uranium … We see a completely comfortable situation for the next 50–60 years. It is a big and a small figure at the same time. It is a big figure as it is almost a human life, but it is a small figure because only the estimated lifespan of our reactors is 60 years, and we can prolong it to 100 years,” he said.

At the same time, new technologies will provide for repeated utilization of the uranium fuel to make the current uranium reserves last for 600 years, he said.
